First and only local company to receive SLS certification for fire rated cables – The Island

Making history and once again proving its dominance in the cable industry, ACL Cables PLC announced that it had received SLS 1504-3-31 certificate as part of the Product Marking System for its single cable unsheathed – Low smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) base cables by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) recently.

SLSI is the highest local authority that awards quality standards for products sold locally. By complying with the required standards, ACL Cables PLC became the first company in the country to achieve this certification. The equivalent British standard (BS) for the above local certification is BS EN 50525-3-31.

Additionally, ACL Cables is currently the largest pioneer company that manufactures a wide range of LSHF cables locally. Certification has been awarded for cables with voltage up to 450/750 volts. The tests were carried out in ACL’s internal laboratories located on their factory premises under the supervision of the SLS audit committee. ACL cables is the only company in Sri Lanka with a full laboratory for testing fire rated cables.

Currently, ACL cables market three brands in the category of fire-rated cables, namely; ACL Fireguard, ACL Firezero, and ACL Fireguard. ACL Fireguard is the leading brand of the three that has reached masses all over the island and is made with a specially insulated PVC compound. The latter two belong to the category of LSHF cables and are widely marketed for high-end construction projects.

As the number one cable company in Sri Lanka, ACL Cables has always been at the forefront of the local cable industry, which has earned it strong popularity in the market.

Upon obtaining this certification, it proves the reliability of the range of fire-rated cables produced by ACL. This accreditation makes ACL the only company in Sri Lanka to produce fire resistant cables in accordance with appropriate local standards and regulations and possessing true fire prevention properties. ACL also obtained international certification from PSB Singapore for the same range before receiving it.

Building fire accidents can occur as a result of electrical short circuits. Thus, the main purpose of fire cables is to prevent the spread of fire while being extinguished in a very short time. Designed with flame retardant qualities through the use of special materials and compounds, ACL fire rated cables are the perfect and reliable solution to protect any building.

In order to receive SLS 1504-3-31, ACL Cables had to perform the following three additional quality tests specified in the standard: Testing under fire conditions for vertical flame propagation of bundled wires mounted vertically in accordance with BS EN 60332-3-24 (Category C), Measurement of smoke density of cables burning under defined conditions in accordance with BS EN 61034-2 and Evaluation of halogens (acid gases) for all non-metallic materials in accordance with BS EN 50525-1 (Annex B).

The certification allows customers to have more confidence when purchasing LSHF cables from us. Based on the process, ACL was initially to study and follow the respective UK standard which meets the above criteria. After that presentations were made to SLSI, which then awarded the equivalent product certification in accordance with local regulations and standards.

ACL Cables PLC holds 70% of the market share recording annual revenues over Rs. 18 billion as a group.
