Local filmmakers receive checks for their contribution to the Mauritian film industry

The checks given to the two local filmmakers, namely MM. Sada Rajiah and Pravesh Das Nunkoo, with respective amounts of Rs 250,000 and Rs 150,000, are a way of rewarding them for their efforts and their contribution to the Mauritian film industry.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr. Avinash Teeluck, made the statement today during an official check presentation ceremony held at his ministry’s headquarters in Port Louis. Other personalities were also present on this occasion.

Minister Teeluck recalled that Mr. Rajiah received some 40 international awards for the film “Three Wise Men”, while Mr. Nunkoo’s film, “The Truth – The Evolution of Gandhi”, was recently honored at of the last Jaipur International Film Festival. The government, he underlined, is proud that the productions of local filmmakers are recognized and rewarded in international festivals.

He stressed that the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage must therefore ensure that local filmmakers receive the necessary encouragement and guidance so that they can surpass themselves. Internationally recognized local productions, he said, represent great potential for the sector. As such, it is the responsibility of the government, in addition to all the programs already available, to ensure that local and international markets provide more opportunities for Mauritian filmmakers, he added.

Furthermore, Minister Teeluck observed that there was a need to come up with a strategy in order to redefine the conditions under which local filmmakers receive support from the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage as well as other organizations such as the Mauritius Film Development Corporation. . According to him, local productions have the potential to exploit international markets and thus, the redefinition of the conditions for benefiting from the subsidies and available programs will encourage the production of local films and documentaries which can eventually be recognized abroad.
