true loves

The Pamplin Historical Park Valentine’s Tea will be held on Saturday, February 12 at 2 p.m. in Petersburg. Park staff dressed in mid-1800s clothing will present a themed program for members and non-members.

According to the museum’s website, Victorians used their creativity to guess what their true loves would look like, what their names would begin with, and other defining characteristics.

In the mid-1800s, Victorian women dipped their hands in various bowls of water while blindfolded to determine whether they would marry a bachelor, a widower, or remain unmarried.

Victorian men and women attempted to guess their future husbands in all sorts of ways, such as pouring molten lead into cold water to determine a future husband’s profession from the shapes made, diving hands in various bowls of water blindfolded to determine whether they will marry a single, widowed, or remain single, and roast hazelnuts over a fire to find out if a couple is compatible.

At this tea, ticket holders will guess future loves and spouses, divination methods will be explored to see how well they work with current couples, and singles will have the opportunity to explore the possibilities of romance.

Due to the popularity of this program, reservations and prepayment are required. A separate virtual option is available.
