Thriller filming in Kamloops as part of a growing local film industry | infonews

Everyone was on deck at a busy film production site in Kamloops today, July 12.
The filming location of a heritage home in the city is one of many sites used for a film titled A private matter. This will be the sixth film produced in Kamloops in just over a year by Cjay Boisclair of Askem Productions and co-producer Jeremy Kulyk of Kulyk Industries.
“I can’t reveal anything about the plot, but I can say it’s a thriller and it’s spicier than what we’ve done before,” Boisclair said.
Each new film produced attracts a larger cast of local talent, providing more training in all areas of film production and forging broader bonds within the community.
Boisclair’s long-term goal is to create a film center and school in the tournament capital.
“As we go, we train people and get more people to train,” she said. “We started a non-profit called YKA Film and we use that to train people and help get the city of Kamloops involved so we can be more of a film center where people can train and go and find other jobs.

Boisclair said his goal was to have a school that was also a studio, and to bring in people from Vancouver to film cheaply in exchange for using the students who trained there. This would allow them to obtain their first credits, which is difficult to do in the industry.
She said it’s cheaper to shoot in Kamloops than in Vancouver, an obvious draw for producers in the Lower Mainland.
The crew is currently 85% local people. Producers use local security companies, hotels, cleaners, caterers, first aid teams and restaurants.
“We support our businesses as much as possible,” Boisclair said. “We need to get some material from Vancouver because it’s not available here, which is another thing we want to bring to a future film center.”
A private matter is filmed at various locations, including the Commodore, Blue Grotto, Venture Kamloops, six private homes, and a boxing gym located below the Blue Grotto.

Boisclair credits her continued success to her hard-working team and co-producer. She said the City of Kamloops has been a big help.
“Sarah Candido of the External Relations Department is the liaison between the city and the people in our neighborhoods and the companies we work with,” she said. “She is phenomenal and we couldn’t do it without her.
“The heads of our departments are also amazing at working closely with their teams and elevating them. We are a movie family.
A private matter is filming until July 20 and will air next year.
